Segregated Beach

While walking through an antique store I found this sign for “American Beach” in Florida.  It says “Negro Ocean Playground”.

This is from Wikipedia:

American Beach is a historic beach community popular with African-American vacationers. It is located north of Jacksonville, Florida on Amelia Island in Nassau County. During the time of segregation and the Jim Crow era, African Americans were not allowed to swim at most of beaches in Jacksonville, and several black-only areas were created. American Beach was the largest and most popular, and was a community established by Abraham Lincoln Lewis, Florida’s first black millionaire and president of the Afro-American Life Insurance Company.

Hard to believe that at one time beaches as well as many other places were segregated it seemed especially so in the 1940’s, 1950’s and 1960’s.

We still have prejuidice in our world, our country and even our own neighborhood and it’s a shame that people still have to endure the hate based on their skin color, religion, political affiliation, gender or sexual orientation.
