Diana Taurasi

The greatest basketball player to ever wear a UConn uniform.  Diana Taurasi was amazing to watch.  A few things about Dee stand out in my memory.  Of course you have the famous Geno Auriemma quote “because we have Diana and you don’t”.  I remember a snowy day in Hartford her freshman year against Tennessee she made a shot before halftime that was damn near half court.  And all Pat Summitt could say was I have to watch this for four years.

Another memory of Dee in her freshman year was her horrible shooting performance in the National semifinal against Notre Dame in a game that saw UConn lose by 15 points after leading by 15 at the half.  The late Randy Smith of the Journal Inquirer wrote about Taurasi crying in the locker room after the game and when he told her she’d be back she told him as long as I am here we’re not losing the last game again.  She was right they didn’t.  She led UConn to three consecutive NCAA titles along the way bringing more men to the women’s game.

These days Diana Taurasi toils oversea’s and with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury where she was WNBA Rookie of the Year and has won yet another championship.

  1. I don’t care for basketball that much, but that is definitely a stirring young lady.
